I never went to a sleep-away camp. Okay, that’s not entirely true. I went to Camp Timberlee in 4th and 5th grades. Imagine getting the chance to do that as an adult… with alcohol! Last weekend I did just that!
A group of girlfriends and I signed up for the Magnet Theater’s improv camp in the Catskills. Last Thursday we piled into a rented car and drove the two hours to Iroquois Springs Camp. The photo above is the view from my cabin porch.
I suppose I should tell you that I do improv. My friends convinced me that a four day trip to the Catskills to do improv all day was a great idea. It was a different experience that’s for sure!
When we arrived we passed the office, housed in a beautiful Victorian building. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to go in and see it.
Our first day, we had two improv workshops, as they called them, both 1.5 hours. Then we trooped to the dining hall for dinner… which was tacos!
And now we come to the part of the story where it relates to my weight loss journey. How do you try and eat healthy when you can’t eat your own food? This is a very tough one. Honestly, I’m not usually very good in situations like this, so before I left, I decided I’d do my best to not go overboard, but I would still get somindulging in as well.
For me, that Tmeant making sure I didn’t take heaping spoonfuls of the food from the trays. Every day there were at least two carbs, rice and potatoes, oatmeal and pancakes or oatmeal and french toast, pasta and potatoes and fries. You get the gist. I told myself I was only allowed one carb at lunch and dinner. In the morning I allowed myself one pancake or one piece of french toast along with the oatmeal. My reasoning there was that lunch wasn’t served until five hours after 8 am breakfast. I needed to keep hunger at bay and the fiber from the oatmeal would help with that.
I also allowed myself to have a few cookies at dinner followed by one or two s’mores at the campfire. I mean, how can you not indulge in that? Am I right?
I’m happy to announce that I only gained .8 lbs. We also walked a lot, at least 10,000 steps a day, which no doubt helped. I also didn’t beat myself up about what I ate. That might have been one of the best things I’ve ever told myself. I knew in advance I’d gain some weight, but at the same time, I knew I’d be able to take it off the next week.
I hope this helps you! I know I’ve heard for years that you need a plan when you go out to eat. Well, I definitely needed a plan when I went to a four day sleep-away camp as an adult. It was different from anything I’ve ever experienced before. My brain was tired by the time I got home on Sunday from all the thinking, talking, and improv-ing we did… but it was worth it.
